Growing up in the suburbs in post-war Japan, it seemed to Hajime that everyone but him had brothers and sisters. His sole companion was Shimamoto, also an only child. Together they spent long afternoons listening to her father”s record collection. But when his family moved away, the two lost touch.

Now Hajime is in his thirties. After a decade of drifting, he has found happiness with his loving wife and two daughters, and success running a jazz bar. Then Shimamoto reappears. She is beautiful, intense, enveloped in mystery. Hajime is catapulted into the past, putting at risk all he has in the present.

داستانی متحرک و متفکر از عشق از دست رفته و شانس های دوم به نظر هاجیمه که در حومه‌های ژاپن پس از جنگ بزرگ شده بود، همه به جز او برادر و خواهر دارند. تنها همراه او شیماموتو بود که او نیز تک فرزند بود. آنها با هم بعدازظهرهای طولانی را صرف گوش دادن به مجموعه رکوردهای پدرش کردند.
اما وقتی خانواده او از آنجا دور شدند، ارتباط آن دو قطع شد. حالا هاجیمه سی ساله است.
پس از یک دهه دریفت، او با همسر دوست داشتنی و دو دخترش خوشبختی پیدا کرد و موفق شد یک بار جاز را اداره کند. سپس شیماموتو دوباره ظاهر می شود. او زیبا، شدید، محصور در رمز و راز است. هاجیمه به گذشته منجنیق می شود و تمام آنچه در زمان حال دارد به خطر می اندازد.
